Point Prim Lighthouse Society Launches $300,000 Restoration Project Following Severe Fall Storm Damage

POINT PRIM, PEI — June 2, 2026 — The Point Prim Lighthouse Society has officially commenced a critical $300,000 re-shingling project to repair and preserve Prince Edward Island’s oldest lighthouse. High winds last fall severely damaged the historic 181-year-old structure, stripping away numerous shingles and exposing the building to the elements.

A portion of the restoration is funded by a grant from the Government of Prince Edward Island’s Rural Growth Initiative through the Community Revitalization Program.

Despite this provincial support, the volunteer-run, not-for-profit society faces a substantial financial deficit. The group must cover a major percentage of the baseline costs, alongside any unpredictable expenses that may arise once workers begin stripping shingles from the historic structure.

“Our mandate is to preserve this lighthouse and its park-like grounds in perpetuity for the people of Prince Edward Island,” said a representative from the Point Prim Lighthouse Society. “The site has always been free to visit, we only charge is to climb the lighthouse. To help us bridge this massive funding gap and keep the lighthouse beautiful, we have installed a new ‘TAP’ donation machine on-site this season. We hope visitors will consider making a quick digital contribution during their visit.”

The Point Prim Lighthouse is a vital piece of PEI’s maritime history. Community contributions from both locals and tourists are now more critical than ever to ensure the iconic landmark remains safe and standing for future generations.
